Top 10 Health Research Initiatives For 2010

Rather than pursuing a new year's resolution that may be destined for failure, why not establish educational initiatives for your health to expand your knowledge. By researching the most effective health strategies, you will not only optimize your health for 2010, but you will develop a framework for health exploration that will take you in directions you never imagined in the years to come.

In no specific order, here's a list of 10 of the most critical topics of research to optimize your health this year and beyond.

1) WATER - The quality of our water is becoming of great concern as toxins continue to increase worldwide infecting all municipal water systems. Without proper filtration, soon it will be nearly impossible to access clean water in any major city throughout the world. Most governments continue to inject chlorine, fluoride and many other harmful chemicals that equally and negatively affect drinking and bathing water. Only independent research on techniques to clean your own water will keep your body free of toxins. Moreover, water wars will likely replace oil wars in the future, so relocating near a natural water source may be a growing consideration.

Research Terms:
water filtration, ceramic filters, tap water, pure drinking water, fluoride, reverse osmosis, carbon filters, distillation, structured water, bottled water

2) ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS AND WIRELESS RADIATION - The negative health effects of electromagnetic fields on biological tissue is very real although it remains highly controversial mostly due to the influence of the technology sector. However, virtually all scientists agree that more research is necessary to determine safe or dangerous levels. It's like one big human experiment which we won't know the results of for several decades. Now, with the increasing proliferation of wireless handheld and portable devices, it is literally impossible to escape EMFs in any major city.

The danger of magnetic, electric, wireless, radio (microwave), ground current, and high frequency radiation is that it is mostly invisible until great damage is done - like the increased risk of some brain tumors in long term cell phone users.

Research Terms:
electromagnetic fields, EMF, electromagnetic radiation, wireless radiation, cell phones, electrohypersensitivity, radiofrequency, RF, Radiofrequency radiation, electromagnetic radiation exposure, EMR.

3) VIGOROUS EXERCISE - The world's population and advancing technology has historically correlated with a global decline in human health. Unfortunately, part of this decline comes from the sedentary and convenient lifestyle which is a result of this technology. This has dramatically decreased the amount of moderate to vigorous exercise which helped enhance the health of our ancestors. Only moderate to vigorous forms of exercise will have a substantial impact in increasing your fitness and your health.

Research Terms:
vigorous exercise, exercise intensity, moderately intense exercise, interval training, high-intensity interval training, HIT.

4) GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS - Through the last few decades, prolific junk science has systematically infiltrated every facet of the food industry. Via political manipulation and compartmentalization of public officials, we have witnessed the gradual advancement of genetically modified organisms and toxins in almost every food available in grocery chains. A staggering 95% of soy and 80% of corn is genetically modified. One thing is certain, it will be extremely difficult to obtain non-genetically modified foods from the conventional food supply in the years to come. Optimize your exposure to non-genetically modified foods by avoiding processed and packaged foods and ensuring you only buy organic fruits and vegetables.

Research Terms:
gmo, genetically modified, genetically engineered food, monsanto, herbicides, pesticides, seeds of deception.

) MEDICAL TESTS AND SCREENING - Even though the medical community advocates for regular screenings for those with illnesses, they may bring little benefit and may actually pose harm to your health. This applies to almost every type of medical screening for cancer and several other diseases. Medical screening carries an immense risk in itself, not only due to the damage inflicted by screening techniques on the human body, but by the very nature of medical follow-up protocols. These protocols usually encourage patients to enter deeper into more invasive techniques, which further cripple health and lead to a very high percentage of fatalities. Mammograms, X-rays, CT Scans and PSA testing can all pose serious consequences to your health.

Research Terms:
mammograms, CT scans, medical imaging, x-ray radiation, chemotherapy, PSA testing, breast cancer screening.

6) SUNLIGHT AND VITAMIN D - Essential for life in higher animals, vitamin D, once linked to only bone diseases such as rickets and osteoporosis, is now recognized as a major player in contributing to overall human health. Sunlight and vitamin D have incredible potential to increase to good health in the adaptive and innate immune systems, the secretion and regulation of insulin by the pancreas, the heart and blood pressure regulation, muscle strength and brain activity. In addition, access to adequate amounts of vitamin D is believed to be beneficial towards reducing the risk of cancer.

Theories linking vitamin D deficiency to certain cancers have been tested and confirmed in more than 200 epidemiological studies, and understanding of its physiological basis stems from more than 2,500 laboratory studies.

Research Terms:
sunlight, vitamin D, vitamin D3, 25-hydroxyvitamin D

7) GLUTEN - An intolerance to gluten can cause a wide array of symptoms, some debilitating. Moreover, delays in diagnosis or common misdiagnoses can be devastating to long-term health. Most wheat encountered in the conventional food supply has been genetically altered from what is was less than a century ago. Intolerance to wheat gluten is four times more common today than it was in the 1950s.

Research Terms:
gluten, wheat, celiac disease, starch, grass-related grains

8
) HAPPINESS - The science of happiness is increasingly suggesting a link between happiness and health. Happier people also have greater protection against things like heart disease and stroke. A percentage of our level of happiness throughout life is strongly influenced by the genes with which we were born. Another percentage is linked to lifestyle, career and relationships. The happier and more joyful your life is, the more you will experience an advanced state of health.

Research Terms:
happiness, healthy outlet, stress, love

) KNOW YOUR DAILY ENERGY REQUIREMENT (DER) - Your BMR, or basal metabolic rate (metabolism), is the energy (measured in calories) expended by the body at rest to maintain normal bodily functions. This continual work makes up about 60-70% of the calories we use ("burn" or expend) and includes the beating of our heart, respiration, and the maintenance of body temperature. Your BMR is influenced by a number of factors, including age, weight, height, gender, environmental temperature, dieting, and exercise habits.

Your Active Metabolic Rate (AMR) is is the total amount of calories you expend through different types of activities throughout the day whether it's reading or walking, dancing or swimming. Your Daily Energy Requirement (DER) is the sum of your BMR and AMR results.

Research Terms:
BMR. AMR, metabolic rate, basal metabolic rate, energy requirement, active metabolic rate

) KNOW WHAT MAKES YOU AGE - There are many things in our world and cultures which contribute to aging. Your geographical location, ancestry, education, sleep, psychology, diet and overall health can dramatically add years to our life or keep us young. By knowing and understanding the variables that cause aging, you empower yourself with the tools to actively participate in creating an optimal enviroment to increase your life expectancy.

Research Terms:
healthy aging, aging and immunity, cellular aging, life extension technology, lifestyle, anti-aging, health age, real age, biological age

Related Links:

Your Real (Health) Age is the biological age of your body, based on how well you've maintained it through various measurements and lifestyle behaviours. This tool will also allow you to calculate your life expectancy.
