If
you're serious about extending good health in the future, make
January your month to start. Eat healthy, be active and live smoke-free.
Heart
disease is the number one killer in the US & Canada. Your
best protection against heart disease is by living a healthy active
lifestyle. By making a few changes in your daily routine, you
can equip yourself with the armor that keeps heart disease away.
Being
active is not just for athletes.
Many
of us perceive physical activity and exercise as the first step
in training for an athletic event, but most experts agree that
even light activity will benefit your health tremendously. 60
minutes of walking or stretching, will benefit your heart. 30
minutes of moderate activity, such as a brisk walk, or raking
leaves, done 3 times a week, will also promote heart health. Recent
studies also tell us that exercise evenly distributed throughout
the day (i.e. 10 minute sessions) may be equally as beneficial.
Eat Healthy
Increasing the number of fruits and vegetables in your diet
has a positive impact on your health. Fruits and vegetables not
only provide you with essential vitamins and nutrients, but they
also optimize the digestive process when eaten in conjunction
with many complex carbohydrate and protein foods such as rice
and fish repectively. Most experts recommend 3-5 servings of fruits
and veggies per day. If you're not at that level yet, try starting
with one fruit in the morning and one in the evening. How about
some carrots with your lunch? Hey, that's 3 servings!
Live Smoke-Free
Most
people don't realize that smoking is a cause of heart disease,
so start by stopping! Quitting smoking isn't easy, but it's worth
the effort, for you and your family. The benefits are almost immediate.
Even within a few days, your body starts getting healthier. After
a week of being smoke-free, you will be able to do more physical
activity and your sense of smell and taste improve. After one
year, your odds of having heart disease are cut in half....now
isn't that worth it?
