Why You Should Line Dry Your Clothes This Summer

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun kills germs on laundry dried outdoors on a clothesline and gives clothes a chemical-free fresh scent, cleaning experts say.

Nancy Bock, vice president of consumer education at the American Cleaning Institute, says in a statement. "While you may find it easy to choose a product that is labeled green, going beyond green is about more than just product selection. It's paying attention to each step that you take before and after you start the wash cycle."

Top 6 reasons to line dry laundry:

1. Saves Money
Most households which abandon their clothes dryer save more than $100 per year off electric or gas bills.

2. Energy Conservation
Line drying laundry conserves energy and helps to protect the environment from pollution.

3. Freshness
Clothes and sheets smell fresh without additional chemical laundry fresheners. This is particularly important for those sensitive to perfumes and dyes used in detergents and dryer products.

4. Physical Activity
Hanging up laundry is a physical activity which you can do inside or outside.

5. Sun Rays Disinfect
Sunlight helps to bleach and disinfect laundry. This is particularly beneficial for sheets, towels and diapers.

6. Peacefulness
Taking time to enjoy the weather, the feel and smell of clean laundry can offer an outdoor experience that is meditative.

Project Laundry List estimates families can save about $25 per month off by drying clothes outdoors.
