What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

So many people suffer a variety of symptoms that could easily be prevented! Do you suffer from any of the following on a regular basis: Allergies, asthma, multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto’s, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, IBS, candida, constipation, diarrhea, ADD, poor memory, headaches, food craving, depression, anxiety, brain fog, joint pain, fatigue, congestion, acne, hives, or psoriasis? If you can say ‘yes’ then you most likely have leaky gut syndrome!

It’s pretty much what it sounds like. Sometimes particles of partially digested food leak through the cell walls of the intestinal lining (your gut) into your bloodstream. Not only this, but also microbes, waste and toxins can leak out through these spaces.

What’s the Problem With This?

When foreign substances, like partially digested food, microbes, waste and toxins, enter your bloodstream, your body treats them like invaders that need to be conquered. Your immune system goes on red alert and sends out inflammatory chemicals designed to neutralize the threat. This also wreaks havoc on your intestinal lining which can lead to malabsorption of nutrients, overeating and eventually weight gain, to name a few potential results.

Eventually this partially digested food combines with antibodies to form immune complexes. They circulate through the bloodstream and are deposited in various tissues, leading to inflammation which then leads to rashes, joint pain, fatigue and skin problems. Add all these symptoms up and it can feel like your body is breaking down. Some people think this is simply ‘normal’ or part of the ‘aging process.’ Instead, it’s actually just symptoms of ‘leaky gut’ which can easily be prevented!

Additional consequences of leaky gut syndrome are:

Gas/bloating, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), food cravings, autism, weight loss resistance, osteoarthritis, muscle pain, shortness of breath, sinusitis, eczema, and rosacea.

Are you starting to realize how likely it is that most of us suffer from Leaky Gut Syndrome!?

How does Leaky Gut happen?

There are a variety of factors, when combined, lead to Leaky Gut Syndrome. In order to minimize your likelihood of getting leak gut syndrome or to heal from it if you do, you want to minimize anything that can cause or exacerbate it.

Factors include:

  1. alcohol
  2. antibiotics
  3. antacids
  4. anti-inflammatory drugs like Tylenol
  5. bisphenol-A (BPA)
  6. candida
  7. dietary induced nutrient deficiencies
  8. gluten (this is the leading cause)
  9. high-sugar diet
  10. low-fiber diet
  11. pain medication
  12. regular intake of certain foods - Soy, Corn, Eggs, Dairy, Gluten, and Peanuts
  13. small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
  14. stress

In order to completely remove the symptoms of leaky gut, you need to remove all the items listed above from your diet/lifestyle. We are bombarded on a daily basis with environmental toxins in our homes, in the air and within our foods. While you can easily (with a bit of work) remove certain foods from your diet (like soy, corn, gluten, and dairy), it’s also important to remove certain medications from your diet and reduce the stress in your life.
