Sickness and Health; Massive Global Nutraceutical Growth Expectation by 2017

It comes as no surprise that the global market for nutraceuticals has grown CAGR of 8.2% over the period of 2006-2012 and that the revenues of the global nutraceuticals industry are expected to reach USD 424 billion by 2017. The Latin American market will be even greater, with expected growth of 12.5% CAGR for the period of 2012-2017.

Disease is spiraling out of control, and a very clear demarcation is growing in society today: those that seek to be healthy by preventative means and those that don’t. Those seeking to be healthy buy organic, don’t eat farmed seafood, make choices that are non-GMO, and most refuse vaccinations. They protect themselves and their families by being informed, by seeing naturopathic doctors, and by taking nutraceuticals to supplement their diet, and to prevent and treat health conditions. The others are either uneducated at this point or place trust in the current system. Their philosophy for trusting is based on the expectation that the system in place is protecting its citizens, and if the product is publicly sold--especially in Canada, the U.S.A., or other G-8 countries, then it must have been evaluated by authorities and good for human health. The media and governing bodies pacify society using avenues of trusted communication deemed worthy, such as the World Health Organization (W.H.O.), which is supported by medical doctors, and clinical trials, which are funded by pharmaceutical companies. When the message is packaged and delivered through the media, it is accepted with total trust and without question.
Education and economics play a critical role in life expectancy. On average, people in high-income countries live 23 years longer than people in low-income countries. The average life expectancy in Canada and its peer countries--among the richest in the world--is 81 years. People in Africa live, on average, to age 54, while people in Southeast Asia live to age 65. Similarly, within a country, wealthier people generally have a longer lifespan than poorer people.
I firmly believe that as a society, we are getting to the point that the healthy and unhealthy will be distinguished by observation alone, especially if you know what to look for. Today, 1 in 3 Americans are obese and by 2030, it is estimated that 1 in 2 will be obese. Without discrimination, could the health of society be judged clearly by observation? Will half be sick and half healthy--could it ever get that defined?
Try it yourself and see if you can distinguish the differences between those who are healthy and those destined to become sick. The shopping mall is the perfect laboratory for your clinical trial. Health is clearly depicted: the skin tone--is it vibrant, pink and glowing, or is it greyish looking and patchy? The eyes--they really do tell everything, and most are blind to the fact. Are the sclera (whites) white or are they greyish and blood shot? Are the irises (pigmented part) deep in colour or are they grey, yellowish and patchy? Are the eyelids (not those inherited by genetic predisposition) tight and does the colour match the skin tone, or are they dark, saggy and inflamed?
Eye health is influenced by gene expression or deterioration from chemicals, radiation, diet and lack of adequate fluid intake, drug medication, cardiovascular health, bad habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, not enough restful sleep, and so on.
Each and every one of us has a decision to make on how we live our lives and whether the outcome will be a long, healthy life or premature death. The projected growth in global Nutraceutical sales will be by those who chose to be healthy and take charge of their own destiny. And it is positive to see an upsurge in growth of natural medicine, for that means more are switching their lifestyles and deciding to be healthier.
