Onions have a potent aroma and even more potent health benefits. A member of the Allium family, onions are rich in sulfur, which gives them their signature smell and a majority of their health benefits.
Sulfur-rich foods help boost the amount of L-cysteine in the body, a crucial precursor for glutathione production. This has a profound benefit for liver health, immune function and cellular integrity, but it can also contribute to a healthy hair line.
Onions are a great source of: Biotin, Manganese, Copper, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Fiber, Phosphorus, Potassium, Vitamin B1 and Folate.
It is no secret that consuming onions on a daily basis is fantastic for your health (not so much for your breath). We are going to discuss the topical benefits of onions, and how they can protect your hair-line and promote hair growth in both men and women.
Using Onions to Promote Hair Growth
A study published in 2002 examined the effects of onion juice on Alopecia Areata, a non-scarring hair loss condition. The study involved 23 patients being treated with onion juice twice daily for 2 months. The placebo group included 15 patients being treated with tap water.
After four weeks, hair re-growth was evident in 73.9% of patients treated with the onion juice. After six weeks it jumped to 86.9%, with males experiencing the most profound effects. 93.7% of males showed positive hair re-growth effects compared to 71.4% of females.
The study was rather small, but the results were extremely promising.
