With the increasing rates of obesity, diabetes and
even heart disease in children, fitness specialists
are now stressing the importance of well-rounded physical
education programs as early as preschool.
KID-FIT is a structured physical education program
for preschool children ages 2-5, created to prevent
obesity and promote fitness during the formative years.
The curriculum has received worldwide recognition since
it was created in 1993. Each 6-weeks, children learn
about a different body system. From muscles and bones
to heart health and oral care. Although topics remain
the same each year, every session is unique and fresh
with new music, games and props. KID-FIT onsite fitness
classes have been running successfully in Southern California
for the past 11 years. Schools who take part in the
program receive free supplemental materials as well.
Items such as childrens activity sheets, classroom
projects, community newsletters and recipes. All in
an attempt to teach children sound nutrition, good fitness
habits, the value of rest and how to take care of their
bodies.
Businesses, organizations and schools outside of Southern
California are now able to reap the benefits of preventative
health for preschoolers through the program's licensing
package. This package allows anyone, anywhere in the
world to instruct the program and receive a number of
classroom downloads. Teachers receive a step-by-step
instructional DVD and music CD every 6 weeks and are
shown in detail what activities to do to a series of
songs. Much like an aerobic class for adults, children
enjoy resistance training through a variety of props,
learn sports skills, develop cardiovascular strength
and endurance, improve flexibility and practice mind/body
relaxation techniques. In addition, fitness and nutrition
basics are woven into every KID-FIT class. Little ones
soon learn how to take care of their bodies and why.
It makes sense to them and its fun!
Currently the program is being piloted in a number
of public schools across the United States. The results
of that study, which examines the educational benefit
of such programs on a very young population, will be
published upon completion.
The KID-FIT web site
provides readers with fitness editorials, photos, a
list of statistics, lecture video clips, information
for reporters and those interested in developing stories
on childrens health and more. Interested individuals
may also join the new online KID-FIT Club. The purpose
of the club is networking and sharing of information
pertinent to childrens fitness.
