Heart Disease Worse Killer
Than Cancer, Women Told
The World Health Organization urged
women on Friday to take better care of their hearts, warning that
cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes kill far
more women than breast cancer every year.
"Although most women fear cancer,
particularly breast cancer, they do not make the same efforts
to safeguard themselves from heart disease, which is eminently
preventable," said Catherine Le Gales-Camus, who heads the WHO's
programs for non-communicable diseases and mental health.
"We must strive to make women aware
that to keep their hearts healthy, they need to eat smart, kick
smoking and move for health," she said in a statement to mark
World Heart Day on Sunday.
Statistics compiled by the WHO
from 21 countries show that of the 16.5 million who die each year
of cardiovascular disease, more than half -- 8.6 million -- are
women. Heart attacks and strokes kill twice as many women as all
types of cancer combined.
