Leaked Reports Slams
UK Gov't 'Failure' on Obesity
A leaked report on Britain's efforts to tackle obesity condemns
the government for "failing" and describes measures taken so far
as inadequate, the BBC reported.
A parliamentary cross-party committee
is due to publish its report, but BBC radio, which has seen a
leaked draft of the report, said it will severely criticize government
ministers for "woefully inadequate" plans to tackle what they
describe as an epidemic of obesity.
The report says the financial costs
of obesity are higher than previously thought, at about 3.5 billion
pounds a year, and that rising costs could even threaten the end
of the National Health Service.
It predicts increased levels of
diabetes, cancer and heart diseases if obesity continues to rise,
and attacks the government for failing to formulate joined up
policies on obesity that link food, transport, education, health
and work.
In Britain, 47 percent of men and
33 percent of women are overweight and nearly a quarter of both
sexes are obese.
An estimated 1.8 million British
schoolchildren are also overweight and a further 700,000 are obese.
