Obesity on the Rise
Among German Children

One German child in five and every third teenager is obese thanks to junk food and a lack of exercise, consumer affairs minister Renate Kuenast said.

Kuenast, who was promoting a "Fit Kids" program to encourage better eating habits, said the trend threatened to lead to serious health problems among a broad cross-section of the population.

"If we don't make some changes, every other adult in 40 years could be obese," she told delegates at a "Children and Nutrition" congress in the German capital.

She said overeating and a sedentary lifestyle among many German children could lead to joint problems, circulation trouble or diabetes in later life.

Kuenast said the Fit Kids program would promote nutritional education in schools and tackle the root causes of obesity.
