Winter Wardrobe

(HealthScoutNews) -- Winter weather is no excuse to skip your outdoor exercise. In fact, jogging or walking when it's cold outside can be more invigorating than exercising in warm temperatures.

But what you wear makes all the difference.

The Health Services Center at the University of California, Berkley, suggests these guidelines:

  • Most of your body heat escapes through the top of your head, so don a hat.
  • A pair of gloves and athletic socks will keep your body's other extremities cozy.
  • Instead of heavy jackets or sweaters, wear layers. This way you can shed them when you warm up.
  • Wear loose clothing. It traps layers of air and gives good insulation.
  • Ditch your damp or sweaty clothing as soon as you can. Because the moisture accelerates heat loss, you could freeze if you stay in your wet garb.
