Yoga Study Will Focus
on Fatigue
Women
who have completed breast cancer treatment and are experiencing
persistent fatigue are being recruited for a study to examine
whether yoga can improve their energy, mood and physical functioning.
The study by researchers at UCLA's
Jonsson Cancer Center will include women, aged 45 to 65, who completed
breast cancer treatment between one and five years ago. Women
taking part in the study will do twice-weekly yoga sessions, participate
in psychiatric interviews, complete questionnaires, and provide
blood and saliva samples for immune and hormonal evaluation.
"We are interested in yoga because
there are some compelling preliminary data that suggest the practice
may be associated with improving mood and energy," Julie Bower,
a researcher at the Jonsson Cancer Center and an assistant professor
of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, said in a prepared statement.
"We are collaborating with a local
yoga instructor who has worked with breast cancer survivors and
is very interested in doing a study to evaluate the potential
benefits of yoga for this group," Bower said.
Women interested in volunteering
for the study should phone Deborah Garet at 310-267-4423 to determine
if they're eligible for the study.
