The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) responds to inquiries from general public and health care professionals on research conducted by the CDC in the areas of environmental health, infectious diseases, health promotion and education, prevention services and occupational safety and health. Callers and mail are referred to the appropriate CDC Center, Institute or Office and to other federal, state and/or private institutions.

 


The National Health Information Center (NHIC) was established in 1979 to help both professionals and the general public locate health information through identification of health information resources, an information and referral system, and publications. Utilizing a database which contains descriptions of health-related organizations, the NHIC staff refer inquiries to the most appropriate resource. Where appropriate, a direct answer is provided, primarily to requests for the names and addresses of organizations, publication ordering information, inquiries regarding the NHIC, or inquiries for which the staff has no database referral resource.
